NYU Tisch West Alumni Council Presents the Tisch West Cinema Club Screening Series
A monthly, members-only screening series that seeks to promote films by NYU graduates working in the entertainment industry on the West Coast by showcasing their work and providing audience Q & A and a reception at the renowned AFI Institute in Hollywood, CA.
FILM: FRAT HOUSE
An exposé of fraternity house rituals and the pledging process, including hazing, intoxication, and verbal abuse--all in the name of ‘brotherhood.’ Investigating the lengths that men will go to in order to belong, documentarians Todd Phillips and Andrew Gurland must themselves participate in several weeks buildup to “Hell Night.” Push-ups in vomit, dog-cage incarceration and other forms of advanced groveling ensue. Through sustained mental and physical degradation, the pledgers believe that they’ve gained—albeit, earned “pride and respect” once they’ve passed the fraternity test.
Phillips (1994) and Gurland (1993) both earned their BFA from the Undergraduate Division of Film and Television at NYU Tisch School of the Arts’ Kanbar Institute of Film and Television. In 1998, they won the Grand Jury Prize for a Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival and the Certificate of Merit for Film & Video – Sociology – U.S. from the San Francisco International Film Festival. Phillips was nominated in 2007 for Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan by the Writers Guild of America for Best Adapted Screenplay and for Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Gurland was won Best American Film at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in 2005 for MAIL ORDER WIFE.
